Ionian Islands

Ionian Islands: Off the western coast of the Greek mainland in the Ionian Sea, united with Greece in 1864. Western countries, especially Italy, have influenced the Eptanisa (literally "seven islands") music, particularly in the larger towns. Corfu (Kerkyra) people are very musical; many towns have organized philharmonics, which give concerts in the main squares; village musicians play the more traditional island instruments. The people of Cephallonia are noted for their humor and cutting wit, some of which is evident even in their dancing.
